Jet Carrying Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya Blocked from Landing at Airport

Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya’s attempt to return to the country and reclaim his leadership position has been blocked by authorities, forcing the leader to divert to Nicaragua and eventually settling in El Salvador where he will now meet with regional leaders who support him.

Several thousand supporters of Zelaya had poured into the Tegucigalpa airport in Honduras to welcome their leader back but instead they were confronted by army troops who fired tear gas at the crowds. Zelaya began to throw stones and by the time order was restored at least two people were dead.

Zelaya had been warned by the interim government about attempting to return to Honduras, having been told his plane would not be allowed to land. Despite those warnings Zelaya pushed ahead with his plans. One week after he was kidnapped by army troops and flown to Costa Rica in a coup.

The new Honduran government has accused Zelaya of attempting to change the country’s constitution in an attempt to extend his term in office. Shortly after Zelaya was overthrown several international leaders condemned the act and called for his return. Despite those calls the Honduran Congress, Supreme Court and military leaders said they had acted legally and would not allow Zelaya to return.

On Saturday the Organization of American States suspended Honduras yet that had little effect on Sunday’s decision at the airport. Now the interim government, led by Roberto Micheletti, has imposed a sunset-to-sunrise curfew.
