An Australian court sentenced a teen boy Thursday to 13 years in prison for the stabbing death of an Indian college student in January 2010. The 16-year-old, who has not been identified because he is a minor, pleaded guilty to murder and attempted armed robbery in April. He must serve 8 years of his sentence before he will be eligible for parole.
The teen was 15-years-old when he attacked Nitin Garg in Cruickshank Park in Melbourne on January 2, 2010. He stabbed Garg, 21, in the abdomen while trying to take the Punjab native’s cell phone and wallet. Garg was on his way to work at a nearby restaurant at the time of the attack. He died of his wounds at a local hospital.
In the wake of Garg’s death, the Indian government said attacks against Indians in Australia had been increasing. The government also advised Indian college students to take precautions like traveling in groups instead of alone.
