A top drug trafficker with ties to the Sinaloa drug cartel was arrested Tuesday in southern Mexico. According to federal police, Luis Rodriguez Olivera was taken into custody at the airport in Mexico City. Officials did not release details on what led them to Olivera, who is also known as El Guero.
Mexico's Ministry of Public Security reports Olivera, 39, was part of the Los Gueritos trafficking ring along with his three brothers Esteban, Daniel and Miguel. The ring, led by Sinaloa cartel leader Joaquin Guzman (aka El Chapo), smuggled drugs into the United States from 1996 to 2008. U.S. authorities were offering $5 million for information leading to Olivera’s arrest.
Of the Olivera brothers, only Daniel remains at large. Esteban was arrested in 2008 and Miguel was killed in August of this year.
