Sinead O’Connor has compared her 18 day marriage to Barry Herridge to “living in a coffin.” In an interview with Britain’s The Sun tabloid, the Irish singer admits their relationship as husband and wife got off to a rough start because she took Herridge, a drug counselor, on a search for marijuana on their wedding night.
"We ended up in a cab in some place that was quite dangerous. I wasn't scared – but he's a drugs counselor. What was I thinking?" she tells The Sun. "Then I was handed a load of crack. Barry was very frightened – that kind of messed everything up a bit, really.”
"It felt like I was living in a coffin. It was going to be a coffin for both of us, and I saw him crushed," O’Connor explained. "The whole reason I ended it was out of respect and love for the man."
O’Connor announced the split Monday in a message on her official website. She said pressure from “certain people” in Herridge’s life led her to end their brief union.
"Dear friends, I had for reasons u will all understand, wished to keep this private but have been told today it is to be leaked in the next few days despite my best efforts. So I must now leak it myself so as the record is straight,” she wrote.
"Within 3 hours of the ceremony being over the marriage was kyboshed by the behaviour of certain people in my husband's life. And also by a bit of a wild ride i took us on looking for a bit of a smoke of weed for me wedding night as I don't drink," O’Conner said. "My husband was enormously wounded and very badly effected by that experience and also by the attitude of those close to him toward our marriage. It became apparent to me that if he were to stay with me he would be losing too much to bear."
This was O’Connor’s fourth marriage. She was previously married to John Reynolds, Nicholas Sommerlad and Steve Cooney.
