At least 35 Kurdish villagers mistaken for terrorists were killed Wednesday night along Turkey’s border with Iraq in an airstrike carried out by the Turkish military. Officials say the attack was launched because the villagers were initially thought to be Kurdish terrorist. It was later determined that the group was actually villagers from Ortasu and Gulyazi trying to smuggle diesel and cigarettes from Iraq.
Huseyin Celik, the deputy chairman and spokesman for the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP), promised a full investigation into the incident. "Even if there was a situation 100% that these people were smugglers, these people should not have been subjected to this, they should not have been bombed. It is out of question," Celik said.
"If there is a mistake or negligence, it will be found out,” he added.
