India’s southeastern states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry were battered by Cyclone Thane Friday. The storm brought 86 mph winds and heavy rain. Hundreds of trees were uprooted, roads flooded, houses were damaged and power lines were downed.
According to reports, the Tamil Nadi district of Cuddalore was hit the hardest. Winds reached 90 mph there and several structures collapsed. A top official of the district said at least 12 people died as a result of electrocution or wall collapses.
At least 7 other deaths were reported in Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. The death toll is not expected to rise, according to officials.
Thane weakened to a “deep depression” as it moved west. Heavy rain and rough seas is expected to linger over the next 24 hours.
