Los Angeles authorities took an unidentified man into custody Monday for questioning in the recent spate of arsons across the city that has caused more than $2 million in damage. The man has been described as a “person of interest,” not a suspect. No suspected arsons have been reported since his arrest.
Although the investigation is ongoing, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck told City News Service that he is confident the man in custody is responsible for the fires. "I feel very good that we've got the right guy. [The suspect] had the right stuff in his van, and we are very confident we found our man,” Beck said.
Since Friday, a total of 55 “fires of concern” have been reported across the LA area. Officials say 45 of them occurred in Los Angeles, 9 in West Hollywood and 1 in Burbank. Most of the fires were started in cars. No one has been killed or seriously injured.
