Rasheed Wallace Signs Two-Year Deal with Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics have signed Rasheed Wallace to a two-year deal, according to reports Monday.

Wallace, who leaves the Pistons after arriving in a midseason trade in 2004, will now make the mid-level exception, which is expected to be around $5.6 to $5.8 million. Last season, his salary was $13.9 million.

Wallace becomes one of a rash of free agents who have or will sign for the mid-level exception during this summer. The main cause is the current economic crisis in America, forcing NBA teams to approach this free agency with more control over their allocation of salaries.

Wallace, a four-time NBA All-Star, joins a core group of veterans in Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, adding much-needed frontcourt depth. The Celtics did not make a qualifying offer to Leon Powe and could lose restricted free agent Glen Davis if another team signs him to a contract the Celtics decide not to match.

The Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks were also interested in Wallace, but the Celtics courted him seriously as Garnett, Allen, Pierce, head coach Doc Rivers and owner Wyc Grousbeck last week flew to eat dinner with him last week.

Wallace won the 2004 NBA Championship with the Pistons and averaged 12.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game this past season.
