The 31 year marriage between Mel Gibson and his wife Robyn Moore was finalized on Friday, making it one of the costliest celebrity divorces.
According to court records, Moore was awarded half of Gibson’s $850 million fortune, making it one of Hollywood’s costliest divorces. Moore and Gibson did not enlist a divorce attorney to draft a pre-nuptial agreement. It took the couple over a year to hash out the settlement.
Mel and Robyn were married in 1980, but split up in 2006. In 2009, Moore filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences, shortly after photos of Gibson with his then girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva surfaced.
Oksana and Gibson have since split, but the couple was engaged in a highly publicized and long legal battle over custody of their daughter, which was settled in August.
Gibson and Moore have seven children together.
Whether a person is a celebrity or just an average person, a divorce can be difficult. There are numerous issues that must be settled and in many cases a third party is needed to help the couple make crucial decisions. A divorce attorney is indispensable when a trying to settle issues of mutual assets and custody of children.
In many states, and in California, spouses can be entitled to half of the marital estate, which can be costly, as seen in Gibson’s case. Any couple filing for dissolution should hire an accomplished divorce attorney to protect their best interests.
