A Chinese chef and his assistant died Tuesday in Sydney, Australia after accidentally using death cap mushrooms in a stir fry dish they cooked for themselves and a friend. The meal was cooked on New Year’s Eve by chef Liu Jun and his female kitchen assistant, Tsou Hsiang, at the Chinese bistro of the Harmonie German Club in Canberra. The Australian Health Directorate said the dish containing the deadly mushrooms was for a “private meal” and was not served to bistro customers.
"The Health Directorate has been advised that the consumption of this food was for a private meal and no food containing the mushrooms was provided to the general public or anyone outside of this small group," the Health Directorate said in a statement.
Jun, 38, and Hsiang, 52, both died of liver failure at a Sydney hospital Tuesday night. The third person who ate the stir fry has not been identified. The person has reportedly been released from the hospital.
