Two former Tibetan monks apparently protesting Chinese rule committed self immolation last Friday in southwest China, authorities have confirmed. Both incidents occurred in the Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan province. One of the men survived and told authorities he and the other former monk planned their suicides together.
The first incident occurred around 1 p.m. in the middle of a street. Police officers extinguished the blaze and took the 22-year-old man to a nearby hospital for treatment. In the second incident, an 18-year-old man set himself on fire inside a hotel room and died.
Friday’s acts of self-immolation were the 13th and 14th in China since March 2011.
