OSHKOSH CP,OSK
They came, one after another, eager to fill out job applications at a manufacturing company that would soon be hiring, one that had just won a government contract potentially worth billions of dollars. Some had resumes, but many of the job seekers who showed up at Oshkosh Corp. last week sought only to get their names on the hiring list. From news reports, they knew the company would need additional help to build thousands of U.S. military vehicles for the expanded war in Afghanistan. All across town, the big military contract was the topic of hopeful conversation. The announcement Tuesday had lifted almost everyone's spirits, even if they never plan to work on the truck-maker's assembly lines. "It's the opposite of losing jobs, and that's good news," said Aaron Baer, co-owner of the New Moon Cafe on Main St. The initial contract, for $1.06 billion, could be worth much more in coming years as the military seeks a lighter, more agile vehicle that's similar to ambush-protected vehicles used in Iraq but is more suited for the rugged terrain in Afghanistan.
