The body of Michael Philbin, the 21-year-old son of Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, was recovered from Fox River in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on Monday. Authorities have not confirmed the body pulled from the icy water is that of Michael, but friends close to the Philbin family confirmed the news.
Michael went missing around 2 a.m. Sunday morning after visiting with friends near the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus. Around 2:30 a.m., police received a call from a security guard who reported someone may have fallen through the ice on Fox River. The guard told authorities he heard someone calling for help.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the entire team is “supporting Joe and his family the best we can.” "The Philbin family's obviously going through a tough time right now, and as we always have, we're a family-first philosophy with our organization, with our program. So we're supporting Joe and his family the best we can, and we're holding out hope that this comes to a positive conclusion,” he said.
McCarthy also said the Packers will be “ready to go” on Sunday for the NFC divisional playoff game against the New York Giants.
The Philbin family has not commented. In addition to Michael, Joe and his wife Diane have five other children. Joe has worked with the Packers since 2003.
