The 69,000 fans expected to turnout for tonight’s match up between the 2-0 New Orleans Saints and the 2-0 Atlanta Falcons will cap a 13 month project that demonstrated the resilience of a city.
The last time the Louisiana Superdome saw a crowd this large was when 30,000 homeless sought refuge from Hurricane Katrina just over a year ago. Since the devastation, New Orleans has worked around the clock to rebuild and repair the home of their beloved Saints.
Over $143 million was invested in bringing the dome back to a symbol of city pride and burying the misery and hopelessness that existed such a short time ago. The entire roof has been rebuilt, 10,000 new seats have been installed, 38 concession stands have been completely rebuild and video screens and scoreboards have been replaced.
The people of New Orleans have shown their love for their Saints by selling out every home game this year, a first in their franchise history. Tonight’s game will feature the highly touted rookie Reggie Bush and quarterback Drew Breese for New Orleans while the Falcons counter with Warrick Dunn and Michael Vick. Tickets for tonight’s game have been selling on the street for over $1,000 for a single seat.
To mark the special occasion a pre-game concert featuring U2 and Green Day will get the celebration started and former U.S. President George Bush will handle the coin toss.
Tonight’s game can be seen on ESPN at 8:30 pm EST.
