More than 1,400 people have been arrested in the Chinese province of Xinjiang following a police crackdown on violence that left 156 people dead and nearly 800 injured.
Chinese officials have blamed ethnic Muslim Uighurs for the violence, claiming they had targeted ethnic Han Chinese in clashes throughout the streets of Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. Several shops and houses were burned and vehicles set afire while Chinese troops attempted to restore order but the violence persisted.
While authorities have blamed Muslim Uighurs for the violence the Uighurs have insisted they had been staging a peaceful protest when police opened fire. The protests had reportedly been in response to two Uighurs who had been killed in a fight with ethnic Han Chinese last month.
Paramilitary police have managed clear the streets in Urumqi and arrested 1,434 people tied to the rioting but officials now believe the violence will spread to other cities, claiming the riots had been an orchestrated effort by separatist Uighurs based abroad.
