New data reveals common causes for truck accidents

A new report, Large Truck Crash Causation Analysis, released by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has revealed the top ten causes of accidents involving large trucks. The FMCSA releases these reports to help keep the roadways safe.

The study examines 1,000 truck accident cases around the nation and knowing what causes them can help prevent a future accident.

There are close to 500,000 truck accidents annually; 5,000 of which result in a fatality. Injuries are also common and these victims often retain truck accident attorneys. Truck accidents are often very costly.

The top ten causes include driver fatigue, improper equipment maintenance with many of the accidents involve safety violations. According to the study, 66 percent of the all commercial trucks have violated state or federal safety regulations.

The study determined that the most common cause of truck accidents can be attributed to driver distraction, which can entail using cell phones, laptops, PDAs, eating or drinking and adjusting stereo equipment. This would align with the recent ban on cell phone use for commercial truck drivers.

A truck accident lawyer can prove that a distracted driver is a negligent driver. Too many people lose their lives because of careless drivers. Others are injured or lose property. The victims of these accidents will want justice and it isn’t fair for them to pay for another person’s mistake. A truck accident attorney will make certain that you receive the compensation you deserve.
