Saints march to impressive victory over Falcons in re-opening of Superdome

The New Orleans Saints re-opened the Superdome by dominating their NFC rival Atlanta Falcons 23-3.  The surprising Saints improved to 3-0 and now own sole possession of first place in the NFC South. Atlanta dropped to 2-1 on the year.

The sold-out and energized crowd at the Superdome welcomed back their Saints and their beloved football team gave them reason to cheer. After stopping the Atlanta Falcons first drive and forcing a punt situation, the Saints defense broke the line and blocked the kick, recovering the loose ball in the end zone for an early 7-0 lead.

After the Falcons countered with a field goal to trim the lead, the Saints closed the quarter with a double reverse run by Devery Henderson and added to their lead 14-3.

With a solid run defense that was able to hold Michael Vick, Warrick Dunn and the rest of the NFL’s leading rushing team to 52 yards on the ground in the first half, the Saints went into the locker room with a 20-3 advantage.

The Saints offensive line came out after half time and bullied the Falcons defense down the field but stalled inside the five-yard line and settled for a field goal, pushing their lead to 23-3.
