Chinese Workers Making Microsoft Products Threaten Mass Suicide

Microsoft’s Hong Kong office has confirmed the company is investigating a report claiming hundreds of workers at a Chinese plant that produces Xbox game systems threatened mass suicide after allegedly being denied pay.

"Microsoft takes working conditions in the factories that manufacture its products very seriously, and we are currently investigating this issue. We have a stringent Vendor Code of Conduct that spells out our expectations, and we monitor working conditions closely on an ongoing basis and address issues as they emerge. Microsoft is committed to the fair treatment and safety of workers employed by our vendors, and to ensuring conformance with Microsoft policy,” the company said in a statement.

According to multiple reports, at least 300 workers threatened to jump off the roof of the Foxconn plant in Wuhan, China after the company backtracked on a deal to offer severance pay to workers who decided to resign rather than be transferred to another plant. In a statement Thursday, Foxconn said the incident was “successfully and peacefully” resolved.
