What is Percocet Addiction?

What is Percocet and why is it prescribed?

Percocet is the North American brand name of the oxycodone-paracetamol compound made by Endo Pharmaceuticals. Although it is one of the more powerfully addictive narcotic based analgesics (painkillers), it is extremely effective at treating moderate, short-term to acute, severe pain. Despite the fact that Percocet is not as addictive as other opioids like codeine or morphine, tolerances to the medication and dependencies on it can build up rapidly.

Percocet has become one of the more popularly prescribed medications in past decades because of its effectiveness at treating pain and because it is not as addictive as some of the other opioid-based medications. Unfortunately, it is also popular with recreational drug users and Percocet addiction and overdose is a commonly treated issue in many ER’s across the US. Percocet addiction is considered a serious public health threat and the DEA views the drug as one of those prescription meds that are threats out on the street.

Another issue with Percocet is that, even if you take it as prescribed, you can build up a dependency on the medication because tolerance build-up tends to be very unnoticeable. What oftentimes results is uncontrollable cravings to take more of the drug in order to achieve the desired euphoric effect. The following side effects, though infrequent and rare, should be considered warning signs that you have taken too much of the drug:

  •  abnormally decreased heart rate and low blood pressure
  • dizziness and fainting
  • feelings of weakness
  • nausea and vomiting
  • not feeling well overall

Due to the above and the increase in the number of deaths from overdose and serious illnesses that are associated with the abuse, addiction, and dependency of the drug, there are now numerous Percocet addiction rehab programs throughout the US.
