Duke Energy Corp. says the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has approved a settlement that will restructure electric rates for Duke’s customers in that state.

Under the agreement, the base cost for power distribution will rise by 3 percent of residential customers’ total annual bill.

As part of the settlement, Duke reduced the revenue increase it had sought by 35 percent, to $55.3 million from $85.6 million.

Duke also will provide up to $40,000 per month for low-income households that are having trouble making utility payments.

Charlotte-based Duke (NYSE:DUK) includes the former Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co., Union Light, Heat and Power in Kentucky, and PSI Energy in Indiana. The company also operates Duke Energy Carolinas.
