NEW YORK -- Small-capitalization stocks couldn't shake off a four-day losing streak, finishing roughly flat, as investors were cautious at the start of earnings season.
A late slide in consumer names offset gains in energy as the market took a wait-and-see approach on the smaller, riskier names.
"Everyone is kind of waiting to see, not what the earnings results will be, but what kind of guidance and clarity can we get over the next two weeks, especially with financials," said Frank Ingarra Jr., co-portfolio manager with Hennessy Funds. "For now, I don't see too much movement in the small names."
