State Street Corp. STT
Alcoa's (AA - commentary - Trade Now) earnings exceeded Wall Street estimates, helping kick off earnings season on a positive note. The company's CEO also noted that signs of strengthening could be seen in the aluminum market, part of the badly-beat-up basic materials sector tracked by ETFs such as iShares Dow Jones U.S. Basic Materials (IYM - commentary - Trade Now) and Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB - commentary - Trade Now).
Alcoa comprises 3.93% of XLB and 3.61% of IYM. XLB and IYM slumped over the last year, falling 36.26% and 46.65%, respectively, in the one-year period ending July 8. The funds have shown signs of recovery in 2009, however, and IYM has risen 9.36% year-to-date while XLB has recovered 7.88%. IYM's top three holdings are Praxair (PX - commentary - Trade Now), DuPont (DD - commentary - Trade Now) and Freeport McMoRan (FCX - commentary - Trade Now), while XLB has Monsanto (MON - commentary - Trade Now), Praxair and DuPont.
