US Treasury Grants $486M to Increase Affordable Housing Development

The U.S. Treasury Department on Friday announced that it would about $486 million in funding to increase the development of affordable housing units.

The funding was authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the fiscal stimulus package President Barack Obama signed into law earlier this year to jumpstart the economy and state governments.

According to the announcement, approximately $36 million will go to Alabama, $ 29 million to Arkansas, $34 million to Connecticut, $76 million to Georgia, $114 million to Louisiana, $44 million to Maryland, $51 million to Massachusetts, $16 million to Montana, $38 million to New Mexico, $20 million to the Virgin Islands and $10 million to Vermont.

New Hampshire will receive an additional $17 million in funding, bringing the total for that state to nearly $28 million, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

The Treasury's announcement Friday marks the fourth round of announcements related to the affordable housing initiative. The Treasury has already announced awards for several other states. The total awards announced by the Treasury come to about $1.2 billion.
