WELL, THE WORLD DIDN'T END. IT DIDN'T get a whole lot better, either.
The former development was all it took in the second quarter for mutual funds to ring up double-digit gains, even as the U.S. recession passed the 18-month mark with no end in sight.
Of course, the realization that things aren't much improved from an economic standpoint -- highlighted by the latest employment figures -- were enough to erase a good chunk of those gains in the early days of the third quarter.
