Novellus Systems Inc. Monday said its loss increased in the second quarter to $50 million, or 52 cents a share, compared to a loss of $2.4 million, or 2 cents a share, last year. The San Jose-based semiconductor manufacturing equipment company said its revenue fell 54 percent to $119.2 million. The company said it would have lost $39.3 million, or 41 cents, if one-time charges were excluded. The loss was larger than was projected by analysts contacted by FactSet Research, who had expected a loss of 38 cents a share on revenue of $118.8 million.
