Personal electronics and computer maker Apple Inc. said people downloaded 1.5 billion applications, or apps, from its online store in its first year. The apps " made by third party developers " are used on Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch devices. Many are free, while others cost a small amount. Some apps, like field guides for identifying birds, or anatomy programs aimed at medical students, are very expensive. The store offers about 65,000 choices of apps. CEO Steve Jobs took a stab at would-be rivals, saying "it is going to be very hard for others to catch up. Critics of the news noted that quality doesn’t equate to quantity, and there are complaints about many not-so-good apps overwhelming the site. The "massive volume of apps makes it difficult at times to pick out those gems from the piles and piles of junk," wrote Jacqui Cheng at Ars Technica.
