Authorities in northern Alabama reported several towns in Madison County and Limestone County sustained major damage after two tornadoes touched down Friday morning.
The most severe damage reportedly occurred in the Walker Lane area where several houses were said to be “leveled.” Limestone County Correctional Facility also sustained major damage and reported several injuries. Authorities reported damage to houses in Harvest and Monrovia and damage to the high school and middle school in New Market. The city of Meridianville also sustained widespread damage. No deaths have been reported.
More than 20 Alabama school systems plan to release students early due to the severe water. The National Weather Service predicts more bad weather could hit the northern part of the state later this afternoon.
Friday’s tornadoes come two days after a powerful storm system churned across the Midwest and left at least 9 people dead. The system generated an estimated 16 tornadoes across the region.
