Vermont's dairy farmers are grateful for a coming boost in federal price supports, but it won't be enough to reverse the downward economic spiral gripping. Vermont's farmers were getting nearly $20 per 100 pounds of milk a year. Now that price is down to about $11.50, and farmers say it costs $16 to $18 to make that much milk.

The Milk Commission had been hoping to hear from processors the businesses that buy milk in bulk from farms, bottle it or make it into cheese and other products and sell it at wholesale to stores. But most of the testimony came from farmers and from aides to Vermont's two U.S. Senators and one House member. The processors have come under scrutiny recently because some have been big jumps in their earnings while farmers have been anguish from low prices they’re able to get for their milk.
