A violent super typhoon moving north in the Pacific is expected to pass close to east Japan before making its way to South Korea over the weekend. According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Typhoon Sanba is currently packing winds over 150 mph. Sanba, which is already as strong as a category five hurricane, is expected to strengthen more with winds forecast to reach 170 mph.
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center expects Sanba to continue its northwest path and brush past Okinawa, Japan on Saturday evening. Sanba is then expected to hit South Korea by Monday. Okinawa and South Korea have been advised to prepare for heavy rain, flooding, damaging winds and power outages.
JTWC describes Sanba as a "very large tightly wrapped system." Sanba comes just weeks after Okinawa and the Korean Peninsula were hit by Typhoon Bolaven. Okinawa sustained little damage, but the Korean Peninsula reported widespread damage and 59 deaths.
