Bemis Company, Inc. (NYSE:BMS) is top volume gainer in the early few minutes of the opening trade and surged 5.63% to $27.20 on massive volume of 1.09 million shares after it said Tuesday its third-quarter earnings fell to $35.8 million, or 33 cents a share, from $44.3 million, or 43 cents a share, in the year-ago period. On an adjusted basis, the Neehan, Wisc., supplier of packaging material said it earned 48 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet Research were looking for earnings of 39 cents a share, on average. For the full year, Bemis forecast earnings in the range of $1.81 to $1.86 a share. The Wall Street consensus is for a 2009 profit of $1.64 a share.
