Flooding in Tabasco, Mexico Leaves 300,000 Stranded

President Felipe Calderon has called the flooding in Tabasco, Mexico “one of the worst natural disasters” to hit the country after nearly 700,000 residents saw their homes either damaged or destroyed from the heavy rains that have pounded the Mexican state all week.

An estimated 70 percent of Tabasco is underwater and the flooding has stranded more than 300,000 people as exhausted rescue workers continue to try and locate individuals who have yet to reach safety.

In the state capital of Villahermosa nearly all services have been shut down, including drinking water.

Calderon delivered a televised address on Thursday night saying, “The situation is extraordinarily grave: This is one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the country.”
