As a hurricane, Noel did little damage but when it returned to its tropical storm roots it battered the Atlantic coastline of Massachusetts and caused power outages for more than 56,000 homes and businesses.
Having battered Hispaniola, where more than 120 deaths have been attributed to sever flooding and mudslides, Noel hit Cuba and the Bahamas before turning its attention north.
South Florida was drenched with heavy rain and suffered beach erosion before Noel began its assault along the eastern seaboard. After a brief stint as Hurricane Noel, the storm lost much of its wind strength but continued to pound away with wind gusts strong enough to snap branches and power lines and cause flooding throughout the Cape Cod region.
