Tropical Storm Mitag Shaping Up to be “Super Typhoon,” Philippines on Alert

Tropical Storm Mitag has caused serious concern among residents in the eastern Philippines and has led officials to issue evacuation orders for more than 200,000 people as they brace for what could become a “super typhoon.”

Forecasters anticipate Mitag will make landfall by Friday and pack winds in excess of 138 mph. With much of the island already saturated from recent rains fears have turned to deadly landslides that could result from the impending storm.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ordered the evacuations two days in advance of the expected landfall in order to ensure residents had a place to go. Many churches, schools and gymnasiums have been converted to shelters for the storm.
