Philippines threatened by “super typhoon” Tropical Storm Mitag

Tropical Storm Mitag has threatened thousands of people in the Philippines causing President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to order a massive evacuation of residents of the eastern Philippines.

The tropical storm is expected to make landfall by Friday, but thousands of people have been evacuated ahead of time. Officials say that some 200,000 people from one province alone will be placed in shelters like gymnasiums, churches and schools.

The storm also threatens Vietnam. The chief government forecaster Nathaniel Cruz says Mitag could turn into a “super typhoon” with winds reaching more than 138 mph. They expect Tropical Storm Hagibis to hit on Saturday.

“It’s still far, and that means we still have time to conduct preparedness,” says Cruz. “With to days in the open seas, it has a big potential to become a very strong typhoon.”
