Landslides in Rio de Janeiro Add to Death Toll from Devastating Rains

Already staring at a significant death toll due to the heaviest rains in decades, Rio de Janeiro will likely see that toll climb even higher after a landslide swallowed at least 40 homes, burying as many as 200 people.

Rescuers have been digging through the mud in an attempt to find survivors of mudslide which occurred in a shanty town in Niteroi, located just across the bay from Rio. Initial reports had indicated that 20 people had been pulled to safety.

Officials have said that as many as 200 people may have been killed instantly when the landslide struck. That landslide, one of several that have hit the Brazilian city, came in the wake of heavy downpours that began on Monday.
