Ciena Corporation (Nasdaq:CIEN), down 12% on 13 million shares, a provider of network solutions, announced yesterday unaudited results for the fiscal fourth quarter and year ended 31 October 2007. Revenues for the quarter totalled USD216.2m, up by 5.5% sequentially from third quarter revenues of USD205.0m, and a 35.2% increase over USD160.0m revenues in the fourth quarter of the prior year. For the fiscal year revenues were USD779.8m as compared with USD564.1m in the prior fiscal year, representing a 38.2% increase. GAAP net income for the quarter was USD30.4m or USD0.30 per diluted share. This was in comparison with a GAAP net income of USD28.3m or USD0.29 per diluted share in the immediately preceding third quarter, and a GAAP net income of USD13.1m or USD0.14 per diluted share in the fourth quarter of the prior year. For the fiscal year GAAP net income was USD82.8m or USD0.87 per diluted share, as compared with GAAP net income of USD0.6m or USD0.01 per diluted share in the prior fiscal year. Ciena had USD1.7bn cash at the end of the quarter, which includes USD892.1m in cash and cash equivalents and USD856.m in short-term and long-term investments in marketable debt securities.

Far East Energy Corporation (OTCBB: FEEC), down 20% on .9 million shares, announced yesterday that a routine Operations Update presentation will be held on December 19, 2007 at 10:00 am central time. Countrywide Financial Corp., (NYSE: CFC), down 4% on 37 million shares, the biggest home lender in the United States, said Thursday it is under investigation in California and Illinois. Company officials said Countrywide, based in Calabasas, Calif., had received subpoenas from the attorneys general in both states, The Los Angeles Times reported. They said Countrywide is cooperating with the investigation but they would not give any details. California Attorney General Jerry Brown said in an interview recently he is looking at the yield spread premium involved in some loans. In those cases, lenders charge some home buyers higher rates than they could qualify for, rebating the premium to brokers.

Charles Gassenheimer, chairman of Ener1, Inc. (OTCBB: ENEI), down 1% on .8 million shares, an alternative energy company, said Wednesday that the company will bring its automotive Lithium-ion battery to market by the end of 2008. "Our batteries have already been tested by the United States Advanced Battery Consortium, which is General Motors, Ford and Chrysler," Mr. Gassenheimer told viewers of the Fox morning broadcast "CEO Corner." "We are the only battery company today using this Lithium-ion technology, which has met or exceeded all of the Big Three's requirements, especially and most importantly best-in-class in safety."
