After heavy downpours soaked Fernley, Nevada on Friday night an early morning levee break flooded more than 800 homes and left 3,500 people stranded.
The Truckee Canal had a 30-foot-wide section break around 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning and sent freezing water cascading into the desert community of Fernley, cutting the residents off of escape routes as they watched their homes flood with the intruding water.
Helicopters from Fallon Naval Air Station have been used to rescue those stranded in the levee break. No injuries have been reported.
