Snow Falls in Baghdad, First Time in Memory

A city accustomed to sectarian killings, suicide bombings, checkpoints, and foreign troops was born anew on Friday morning, at least for a few hours as residents in Baghdad awoke to the first snowfall in memory.

While the snow didn’t last long it did bring a child-like wonderment to the old and young alike. Hearing a 19-year-old say they had never seen snow meant nothing to those in their 80’s who could profess the same.

Unprepared for such a phenomenon, the Baghdad airport was forced to close for awhile due to poor visibility and freezing temperatures.

There were many Iraqis who were seeing the snow as more than just a random weather occurrence, several felt the snow to be a sign of peace and chance for rebirth.
