Powerful Cyclone Hits Fiji, Kills 6

A powerful cyclone hit Fiji on Tuesday and killed at least 6 people. Tropical Cyclone Gene cut the country’s power supply, blew roof tops of houses, and flooded some areas.

Officials said all six victims died on the main island, Viti Levu. Two of the six were electrical linesmen. They were killed when they were hit by power lines. Two others died after from injuries sustained in the storm while another drowned and the last victim was killed in a fire.

Hundreds of residents were evacuated to government shelters and schools. Many of their homes were left without roofs, according to Fiji’s Disaster Management Office.

Officials say winds reached up to 88 miles and hard rain caused flooding. Gene was moving west as of Tuesday. A cyclone alert was issued in Vanuatu.
