The electronic memory market is valued at an estimated $64.3 billion for 2007, which constitutes about 23% of the total semiconductor industry. This particular market has been considered one of the leaders of the semiconductor industry, along with the PC microprocessor market, and to a lesser extent the mobile phone processor market. Currently, the memory market`s lion share belongs to the DRAM market, expected to hit $36 billion in 2007.
Electronic memory devices include both volatile and non-volatile memory. Volatile memory is memory that loses its data when power connected to the memory is turned off. Presently, most random access memory (RAM) such as DRAM, SRAM, MOSFET and EEPROM is volatile. Non-volatile memory is memory that retains its data even when power connected to the memory is turned off.
