Tropical Storm Strands Hundreds on Ferry off Philippine Coast

As a tropical storm battered the western Philippines, more than 300 passengers aboard a ferry were stranded in rough seas unable to reach port.

Passengers aboard the MV Starlite Pacific spent Thursday night and most of Friday in the waters south of Manila as food was dropped by a coast guard helicopter.

Once the waters were calmer on Friday, smaller motorized vessels were able to reach the ferry and passengers were safely transported to land.

The tropical storm formed in the South China Sea, and was gaining strength Friday as it moved toward northwest Manila. It is expected to make landfall Saturday.
