China Launches 2nd Weather Satellite

China launched its second weather forecasting satellite Tuesday in an effort to accurately predict weather for the Summer Olympic Games and to provide forecasts for areas under reconstruction after the earthquake.

The new-generation satellite includes sensors that can monitor the Earth’s atmosphere and climate, which will provide much need weather information for earthquake recovery efforts currently underway.

According to the China Meteorological Administration, the last weather-forecasting satellite was launched in December 2006 and is still providing weather-forecasting data.
