Tropical Storm Alma hit the coast of Central America Thursday with strong winds and heavy rains, becoming the first such storm of the eastern Pacific season.
Costa Rican officials were forced to evacuate low-lying areas and set up storm shelters after the heavy rains caused flooding and mudslides.
Tropical storm warnings were posted from Costa Rica to El Salvador. Forecasters are predicting Alma will strengthen before hitting Nicaragua early Friday, with higher elevations seeing as much as 20 inches of rain.
Alma is the first named storm of the eastern Pacific season which began May 15. The Atlantic season begins June 1 with forecasters predicting as many as 16 named storms.
