At least two are dead after a severe tornado attacked the Kansas cities of Manhattan and Chapman on Wednesday night.
One of the people killed was found in a yard in the town of Chapman, about 20 miles southwest of Manhattan. The second was found outside a mobile home in the town of Soldier, KS.
The tornado left significant damage to Kansas State University, which is located in Manhattan, KS. Authorities asked people to stay away from K-State last night due to downed trees, power lines, and flooding.
Cars were flipped in parking lots, at least one campus building was destroyed, and several others have considerable damage.
There were no serious injuries at Kansas State, but much of the campus remains without power.
The university was scheduled to have freshman orientation Thursday morning. Officials say that the orientation will commence, but it will be moved because its scheduled location is without power.
The storm destroyed up to 50 homes and damaged hundreds in Manhattan, but the most extensive damage from the tornado was located in Chapman. Officials say that 85% of Chapman was damaged.
The storm destroyed 60 houses in Chapman. Another 30 suffered major damage and about 30 received minor damage.
Several houses were destroyed in Salina, which is 60 miles southwest of Manhattan.
The Manhattan Mercury and the Salina Journal, two popular newspapers in northern Kansas, have been covering the tornado extensively.
