Iowa Floods Force More than 20,000 from Homes

More than 20,000 residents in Iowa have been evacuated from their homes since heavy rains beginning June 6 sparked mass flooding across the Hawkeye State.

Governor Chet Culver has declared most of the state a disaster area as large portions of land bearing corn and soybean crops now lies submerged under water.

On Saturday a levee gave way at the Des Moines River allowing water to flow freely through the areas just north of downtown. The flooding led to nearly 300 homes being evacuated and city crews scrambling.

In Cedar Rapids a large portion of the residents were forced to flee as were patients at hospitals as the Cedar River flooded and quickly enveloped 400 blocks and threatened the city’s drinking water.

On Friday the Cedar River crested at 32 ft, an amazing 12 ft higher than the previous record recorded in 1929.
