Flooding in China Leaves 200 Dead, Missing

Heavy rains in southern China over the weekend have led to extensive flooding, leaving some 200 people dead or missing, and driving 1.2 million people from their homes.

Officials report that more than 67,000 homes have been destroyed in the flooding, and farmers have indicated that crops on over 2.5 million acres are ruined. The hardest-hit provinces are Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangdong, and Guangxi.

The floods come at a time when many are rebuilding and recovering from a devastating 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck southwestern China on May 12.

The heavy flooding is the worst to hit the Pearl River region in more than 50 years. Torrential rains are expected throughout the area for another 10 days.
