The death toll from Typhoon Fengshen rose to 622 Thursday, according to the Philippine National Disaster Coordinating Council.
Hundreds of others are missing and feared dead after a ferry capsized Saturday during the height of the typhoon. The M/V Princess of the Stars carried 862 passengers and crew, but the official count from the ship Thursday reported 56 survivors and 124 casualties.
Rescue operations continue on board the ferry, but efforts have centered mainly on recovering the hundreds of bodies that can be seen floating inside the overturned ship. More than 100 divers have been hampered by poor visibility and strong undercurrents. Coast Guard officials estimate that it could take as long as a month to recover all the bodies.
On shore, heavy flooding caused 498 fatalities and damaged over 100,000 homes.
