Just as experts within the addiction field predicted, the tougher economy has produced a higher incidence of alcohol and drug abuse.
Recent published studies show that the incidence of drug abuse has skyrocketed since the economic downturn within the United States. Untold thousands are turning to drugs and alcohol for the first time in their lives to try and escape the harsh economic reality we are facing.
“It begins quite innocently,” remarks a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “A casual social drinker increases the frequency with which he/she drinks - what was just an occasional drink after work becomes the method of coping and dealing with the burdens of day-to-day life. In addition, the incidence of depression has increased all around. Depression not only brings emotional and psychological pain, but it can manifest itself in physical ways as well. Once a person starts exhibiting physical symptoms, they go to a medical doctor who may prescribe pain medication as a temporary fix for the patient’s pain. For a person who is predisposed to addiction, this can be a recipe for disaster. The individual begins to use the painkillers for their physical pain initially, and then they soon realize the accompanying euphoria is an added benefit- a means of escape from their personal stresses. Such is the evolution of an addiction.”
