Hurricane Bertha Weakens, Now a Category 2 Storm

Hurricane Bertha has weakened to a category 2 storm, according to forecasters.

The storm is expected to continue weakening as it tracks east-northeast off the northern Leeward Islands, about 975 miles southeast of Bermuda.

Meteorologists were surprised Monday when Bertha escalated from a minor hurricane into a major hurricane over the course of just a few hours.

Bertha is not expected to make landfall.
