Superlattice Power Incorporated announced it is investigating plans to leave the ground and develop batteries for space flight applications. The experimental investigation into space flight applications involves a unique process for large-scale production of two cathode materials for their ion lithium batteries.

The new cathode materials will be less expensive than existing materials commonly used in the industry, and composed of environmentally-friendly manganese. The Stoichiometric general formula for these two cathode materials are Li(LixNiyMnz)O2 and Li(LixNiaMnbCoc)O2. The desired results for Superlattice Power will be increasing the current gravimetric capacity of 240 mAh/g to 280 mAg/g. This result will be targeted and potentially achieved at the company’s research facility, where development has already begun.

Now that the relatively new venture is in order, it still awaiting a team leader, but Superlattice Power will secure a doctoral candidate dedicated to leading the efforts to synthesize the composite anode. Space flight marks one of the many potential uses for this breakthrough battery technology. There is already a huge potential for these products in electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as many specific military and medical applications. Space flight would prove the potential for use in extreme temperature and oxygen-deprived environments, and solidify Superlattice Power as a well-rounded business.
